First we have to know about the " Power Factor " to understand why addition of capacitor won't reduce electricity.
Let us see why addition of capacity cannot reduce electricity bill below example
Example : Inputs from Single phase Energy meter reading - Power Factor 0.6, Current is 36A before the installation of Capacitor.
Power P = V I Cos Ⲫ
= 230 x 36 x 0.6
= 5000 Watts
After the installation of Capacitor, Inputs from Energy meter - Power Factor is 0.8, Current is 27A
Power P = V I Cos Ⲫ
= 230 x 27 x 0.8
= 5000 Watts
From the above calculation, It is clear that when we improve power factor by adding capacitor the current drawn by the load reduces. Hence, the power consumed by the load will be same as before installation of capacitor.
Note :
In Industries, Due to the poor power factor. It will consume more amount of current from the service provider for the same amount of power. It limits the capacity of the distribution equipment. So that the utility will impose penalty for the consumer if power factor goes below the recommended level.
